Open Window

I found my inspiration for the sculpture “Open Window” in the saying “God doesn’t close a door without opening a window.”

The polished stainless-steel orb suspended in the center represents that moment of grace when one recognizes the opportunities presented and the choice to take action, moving on, to a new situation in life.

The orb holds the window of opportunity open as the top is delicately balanced in an improbable way, which appears to close as the viewer moves around the sculpture.
The gold leaf represents God and can be seen in the reflection off the orb. Gold is found in many iconic religious pieces of art, which is why I chose to echo it in this piece even though there is no overt specific religious iconography. The concept speaks of a spiritual and universal truth encompassing the general human condition of tests and trials that make us stronger and strive to be in a better place mentally, physically and spiritually.
The large black rectangle represents the door or window and is meant to be a little intimidating, as it is that perceived barrier, which needs to be overcome or passed through.
