D.R.’s Saddle

Although Colorado sculptor George Walbye is an artist who has spent his entire life in the Rocky Mountain West, his sculpture moves beyond ordinary perceptions of western art. A series of bronze bowls and lidded pots, for which George is especially noted, use elements inspired by American Indian art and ornamentation, but there is a contemporary quality in their design.
George was born in Rawlins, Wyoming, and spent boyhood summers working on ranches near the area homesteaded by his grandfather at Whiskey Gap. The beauty and vitality of the West are qualities reflected in his art. He is one of five founding artists whose work was selected by the Loveland High Plains Art Council for permanent display in nationally renowned Benson Sculpture Garden. His bronzes are in private collections throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States.
